On February 6, 2023, a Magnitude (M) 7.8 earthquake struck southern and central Turkey and northern and western Syria at 4:17am local time. Shortly later, a M7.5 struck the same location at 1:24pm local time.
The NEHRP Program Coordination Working Group (PCWG) discussed the consequences of this earthquake sequence with regards to potential impacts on seismic safety in the U.S. The agencies confirmed activation of the NEHRP Post-Earthquake Investigations Program and the PCWG stood up an Earthquake Investigation Committee (EIC) for this event.
